TL;DR August 28th

Welcome to our new(s) segment: TL;DR of Immigration News, for when the news is Too Long and you Didn’t Read it.

This is a weekly collection of immigration-related news stories, and this week they feature Never Again Chapter Updates! These bite-size summaries will keep you up to date without overwhelming your inbox.

The Democratic National Convention featured a lot of immigration talk. It was…not great.

Last week, the Democrats officially nominated Vice President Kamala Harris as their candidate for President in a four day long flag waving confab in Chicago. Democrats leaned heavily into their newest attack line on immigration. Namely…that THEY, not Republicans, are the ones who will finally get ‘tough’ on the border. Vice President Kamala Harris herself thundered in her acceptance speech that she wouldn’t play politics with immigration, and would bring back the bipartisan immigration bill.

This bill has some pretty horrible provisions, such as ending asylum and expanding detention. It’s disappointing, but perhaps not surprising, that Democrats have latched onto a racist right wing framework on immigration to shore up a perceived electoral weakness heading into November.

As people concerned about a just immigration framework that ensures freedom of movement and dignity, we know that a better way is possible. Heck, our chapters and partners all across the country are showcasing what a movement grounded in this vision looks like. 🔽 Check out these highlights below! 🔽

Voces de la Frontera calls on Waukesha County to rescind the racist 287g program

Even though the sheriff of Waukesha County tried to cut the “public” part out of a public review process, Never Again Wisconsin and Voces de La Frontera made their voices heard. The sheriff scheduled a legally mandated 3-year review of the county’s 287(g) police-ICE contract with minimal notice, early in the morning on a weekday, while an election was happening.

But instead of giving up, over 50 residents of Waukesha, WI and allies, showed up in force on August 13th to take this one in three years chance to speak up against the harms of police-ICE collaboration. Although the sheriff cut the meeting short, preventing everyone from speaking, we filled the room with powerful stories of injustice and fear caused by 287g, uniting against this harmful policy that separates families.

State of Tennessee: we reported you for violating our civil rights

The Our State Our Language Coalition which includes the Never Again Tennessee chapter submitted a federal complaint to the federal government for violating Title VI of the Civil Rights Act. That’s because they skip over offering drivers services in the languages that people actually speak in Tennessee, like Arabic and Chinese, in favor of languages that serve car manufacturers, like German and Japanese. *facepalm*

After 15 years of being put off and ignored by Tennessee Drivers’ Services, they can’t ignore us anymore. Not after our federal complaint got 9 stories in the media, crossing television, radio, written media and Spanish-language media.

Make sure Tennessee Drivers’ Services knows we’re here and we’re fighting by liking, sharing, and tagging @TNDeptOfSafety on this Instagram post.

Newest New Yorkers Continue to Face Shelter Evictions Amid Deadly Xenophobic Attacks

Migrants sleeping in a Brooklyn park are living in fear after a series of deadly shootings motivated by xenophobia and anti-immigrant hate. The situation has been exacerbated by NYC Mayor Eric Adams' deadly 30-day shelter eviction policy, which requires individuals to leave homeless shelters after staying for only 30 or 60 days. This policy has left many vulnerable individuals without safe housing, increasing their risk and heightening their sense of insecurity.

Never Again Action, along with Jews for Racial and Economic Justice (JFREJ) are among the advocacy groups urging elected officials to #EndShelterEvictions. Join the Migrant Safety working group for a press conference to End Shelter Evictions on September 4th!
